The Nyoongar Six Seasons are a fantastic indicator of change compared to the European 4 seasons in the South West WA. The Nyoongar seasons don't change by a date, but by observing key indicators on country. This more accurately depicts changes and be in-tune with nature - and as a gardener, allows you to grow much more effectively by moving with the changes as they occur, rather than fighting against them.

Kambarang Season of Birth
The frosty mornings begin to subside and the heat from the sun brings energy of Kambarang, a profoundly transformative time where the bush bursts into life. Everywhere you look, a riot of colour signifies the season's peak.
The continuous golden clusters of the Acacias is joined by the orange Banksias, setting a radiant backdrop amongst the usually beige bushland. The striking Kangaroo Paws stand tall, amongst the native Orchids. The Balgas (Grass Trees) towering flower spikes burst with cream floral, especially following a recent burn. The undeniable floral highlight, however, is the Mooja, or Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia). Its brilliant orange-yellow flowers blaze across the landscape, a natural, fiery signal that the intense summer heat is now imminent.

This period of warming and longer dry spells also brings life to the animals. Reptiles emerge from their cool-weather slumber, hungry and active, making October the most common time to spot a snake. The bush is filled with the insistent chorus of fledgling birds demanding meals from their busy parents, and if you haven't made friends with your local Koolbardies (Magpies) they will be territorial, guarding their nests and young.
The Garden Awakens
The vegetable patch mirrors this surging energy. It's a critical time for gardeners, marked by both harvest and preparation.
The appearance of Ladybugs is a welcome sight, as these natural allies arrive to feast on the emerging aphid populations.
The soil is warm enough now to receive the season's promise: it's time to get those summer seedlings into the ground.
The leaves of your planted garlic plants are now starting to brown, signaling that the bulbs are mature and ready for harvest.
Finally, while the warm weather dominates, the residual, occasional rain showers continuing into October making this an ideal window for starting a hot composting to turn your winter waste into high-quality soil for the planting season ahead.
